Megumi is Nadesico's communications officer and a senior member of Akito's "harem." In fact she shares a smooch with him in the mecha bay at one point, much to Yurika's annoyance.
To make things even more complex, Megumi was an anime voice over actress before she became a member of the Nadesico crew. One of the things that makes Nadesico so enjoyable is the way the series blurs the wall between the real world and the anime world. One episode actually shows Megumi doing voice over work, which is very surreal.
